What to Wear to Your Upcoming Photo Session
You’ve booked a photo session! That’s SO exciting, but then you realize you have to worry about what to wear. I get it, it can be stressful, and if you’re indecisive like me, it can be overwhelming when you’re looking for ideas. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! I’ll go over all the do’s and dont’s, as well as cover some basic suggestions. I’ll also link some of my tried and true client favorites!
Do’s
Try to coordinate and go for the same vibe as your partner! If one of you is wearing a nice dress or suit, your partner should be wearing the same attire. The same goes for if you plan on dressing more casually.
Wear something that makes you feel comfortable. What you wear can make or break the session, so it is key to wear something comfortable. A photo session is definitely not the time to change your entire aesthetic and risk feeling uncomfortable or self-conscious! Wear what makes you feel the most pretty/handsome.
Make sure that your clothes fit well! I don’t want you adjusting your clothing the entire shoot so that you can focus all your attention on the posing and prompting that I will be guiding you through.
Neutrals/earth tones are the best. They will always be the most flattering as well as timeless.
Take into consideration the environment that we’re shooting in and if your outfit will match the aesthetic (i.e I probably wouldn’t wear stilettos in a grass field!)
For maternity - I always recommend wearing maxi and form-fitting dresses. This highlights your beautiful body as well as helping to elongate it.
Don’t’s
As much as I appreciate brands, try to steer clear of anything with loud or huge logos. This includes your shoes (except for neutral shoes like all-white AF 1’s)! No loud, bright, and heavily branded shoes, etc. Brands are distracting and take away from the cinematic feel. Heavily branded clothing can also date your photos.
Don’t wear something that you’re not 100% comfortable in! Take into account the body parts that you’re still learning to love. For example, I find that most women are self-conscious about their arms, so if this is the case, I would avoid sleeveless clothing. The same goes for men!
Don’t wear something you wouldn’t normally wear. This adds to the discomfort and then looking back at your photos and questioning your style choices.
Don’t go over the top! Don’t put too much makeup on or do your hair too much. You are the most beautiful and handsome as yourself. I love photographing people in their most natural states.
Don’t wear stripes, especially horizontal stripes. Cameras alter this pattern and create a weird effect. Stick to solid colors and small floral prints.
Lastly, do not match, but coordinate! Use certain colors to blend your outfits together.
Instead of this:
Try something like this:
Zack is wearing a black plaid shirt with pops of neutral color, while Disha wears a white dress to compliment the white in his shirt. The black flannel works, since it isn't a loud, flashy color. It doesn’t take away from the cinematic feel of the photo.
Where to shop:
With online shopping being so popular these days, so many options can be overwhelming. Some of my favorite brands for photo sessions include ASOS, H&M, Gap, Lulu’s, and Amazon. Other popular client favorites are Reformation, Aritizia, and Uniqlo.
Amazon has been such a popular spot for my clients that I’ve created a list of some client favorites here.
For dress rentals, you can find beautiful dresses here: https://www.instagram.com/_thekindredsoul. A lot of my maternity clients opt for these, but you do not have to be pregnant to rent their dresses! They offer some gorgeous ones for all portrait sessions.
You can also rent clothes from websites such as Nuuly or Rent The Runway.
Good luck and happy shopping!
